Writing Successfully: Truth or Consequences

Writing can be an exciting job. It can be an excellent stress reducer. When you have so much inside of you that you just want to release, writing can be a good outlet. The gift of free writing has no boundaries, no rules or regulations, and it is almost never wrong. Structured writing, on the other hand, has its limits. There are specific rules that need to be adhered to, and you can be wrong, sometimes dangerously wrong.

We have discussed the importance of not engaging in any form of plagiarism. I have called it on numerous occasions a slap in the face of the original author. There are other aspects of taking someone’s ideas and conveying them to your audience. If you fail in any of these areas, you will be taken less seriously as a writer, and you could even find yourself in some hot water if you are not careful.

Fact Checking

I’m going to say this only once. Wikipedia is NOT your friend. It is not the end all when you are required to give facts about a particular topic. In case you did not know, Wikipedia functions on an open source platform. That means that anyone can add to it, take away from it, or make changes to what is already there. It has gotten better over the years by adding features that make it harder to submit false information, but would you want to take that risk?

When you are checking facts, it is always to your benefit to locate more than one source for the point you are trying to make. For instance. The Reverend Billy Graham recently passed away. The internet memes toting quotes from the famous evangelist were everywhere. One of the quotes attributed to Reverend Graham was derived from a quote by Reverend Dwight L Moody who lived about 120 years ago. Both said it, and I am sure that Rev. Graham used his quote because Dwight L. Moody was one of his heroes. It would be easy for an uneducated writer to attribute something to someone and inadvertently report misleading facts.

Another meme that makes me laugh is one that shows President Lincoln. The quote attributed to him says, “The problem with quotes on the internet is that they are often untrue.”

And yet another one shows Patrick Stewart, and the quote says “Use the Force, Harry. –Gandalf” Yes, it is meant as a joke to offend Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and LOTR fans all at once. But there are writers out there who choose to include in their prose untrue, misleading, or ignorant information.

I am not saying you should never use Wikipedia. The site is very informative and can be a good beginning. With the information you find, it is imperative you find other sites that corroborate your fact. Often Wikipedia will have a linked source, but not always. This is what is dangerous about using it as your only source.

It also goes without saying that you need to understand the difference between fact and opinion. It is a fact that pumpkin pie is a pie. It is an opinion that it is the best flavor of pie ever. Facts are concrete and unchanging. All opinions are subjective; they can change in a heartbeat.

Thorough Research

Just because you think you are familiar with a subject does not give you license to say whatever you want about an issue. It is essential to do your part and conduct a bit of research on the topic you are writing about. If only to confirm what you know, especially when you need to know if you should cut the red or blue wire. Going with a gut feeling can keep the bomb from detonating this time, but eventually, you are going to get burned.

A prime example: In the novel I am writing there is a fire. The fire department is called out, but the fire is not one that can be fought with water. It would require a specific type of chemical to help the firefighters extinguish the blaze. Now, if I had only gone with what I know about fire trucks, then I would have the fighters put out the burning structure with a plain old fire truck. Through research, I discovered that water could not be used on a fire fed by grease and oil.

It doesn’t have to be about explosives or Class A vs. Class B extinguishants. It could be about a baker or a ballerina. Research can tell you what pains they went through to get to where they are. Research can tell you the difference between sterling silver and white gold. Without research, you would be out a lot of money.

Without solid research, you could lose a reader quickly if they know something you thought you knew. You don’t want a reader to get to that part in your article or book where you describe the process of changing the oil in a car only to miss a step, and they catch it with a, “No, that’s not what you do. That’s wrong.” You lose all credibility with your reader and anyone who they tell that you don’t know what you are talking about.

Final Thoughts

We talked about tools of the trade a few weeks ago. Fact checking and doing thorough research is more important than all of those combined. You can have perfect spelling, immaculate grammar, and not an iota of plagiarism, but without accurate information, your work is worthless. You will lose readers, you will lose clients, and you will lose any respect you may have gained in the writing world.

Yes, it takes time, but it is time well spent. Like one of my mentors says, “Freelance writers are a jack of all trades, but master of none.” We learn, and we learn, and we write. A writer is, in my opinion, is more educated than many people with degrees. We spend the majority of our time studying subjects so that we can efficiently write about them. I am convinced that I spend more time researching a topic than writing about it. That is one thing that they do not tell you when you sign up to be a writer…but then again with a little bit of research, you would already know that.

5 Reasons Why I Am Not Writing This from the Beach – Warren Fowler | Guest Post

5 Reasons Why I Am Not Writing This From The BeachEveryone dreams of a writer’s life. You book your trip to Seychelles. You pack your laptop and light beach clothes. Sunglasses and flip-flops are a must. You enjoy at least two months of vacation there since you can afford it. How can you afford it? Well, you’re working right there, on the beach. You’re making money while enjoying yourself.

Everything works so fine in our imagination, doesn’t it? But the reality is different. Surprise, surprise: I’m not writing this from the beach. I don’t know any writer who works from the beach. Sure; I know travelers and adventurers, but they are taking some time off work, so they can fully enjoy their trips. As for the writing process at the beach, here are five reasons why it didn’t work for me.

1. The Beach Environment Has a Destructive Power

I recently talked to my friend, Monique, who works as a writer for BestEssays. She just came home after spending two months in Ecuador, so I was eager to hear about her experience: “I didn’t get to do as much work as I planned to,” – she said. “It went well for the first week and I was living the writer’s dream. But you know what? The sand and sun ruined my laptop. So that was it; I had to take a break from work and convince myself to enjoy the trip as a full-time tourist.”

You love the heat and humidity, but your laptop doesn’t. So the next time you see a lovely photo of someone working on their laptop at the beach, remind yourself of this: that scene is not even close to reality!

If you do intend to work and travel, please do it in your room. You can wake up really early in the morning, do your writing, and enjoy the beach for the rest of the day.

2. What about the Bills?

When writing is your job, it has to pay the bills. In my case, I had an apartment back home, and the expenses were up to $1000 per month. I thought: I’ll save on electricity, so I’ll pay less. I packed my bags and went to explore Italy for a month. I still had to pay the bills back home, since you can’t really avoid rent. But I had other bills to pay: accommodation.

See? When you travel, you have gigantic expenses, and your writing business may not cover them all. You need savings, so you’ll be comfortable on your trip. If you plan to afford them while working, you should be ready for unpleasant surprises. Chances are, you’ll want to explore. You’ll be working less, and that means you’ll be earning less money. In my case, I wasn’t able to afford all expenses, so I was late with the rent.

Italian beaches didn’t even seem nice when I realized that.

3. It’s Not Really a Vacation

Let me tell you something about my vacation in Italy: it wasn’t a vacation. The thought that I had to work more to support the trip was incredibly burdening. I did not isolate myself from the screen. Time away from the screen… now that would be the ideal vacation for me.

When you use technology every day (and you surely do that when you’re a writer), it makes you tired. You need some time off. And you don’t get it when you intend to write at the beach. Wait; didn’t we just prove that writing from the beach was not a real possibility? Never mind. You get my point.

4. You’re Not Getting the Most Out of Your Trip

Let’s say you want to go to Cuba. It’s a lovely country. If you intend to work, you can stick to the schedule described above (write in the morning and explore for the rest of your day). However, writers can’t usually stick to a definite schedule. Inspiration comes and goes. Sometimes you’re inspired to write for an entire day.

So the chances that you’ll stay on that schedule are really slim. You’ll simply write and explore in sessions throughout the day, but guess what: you won’t be able to explore much. You will probably limit yourself to the hotel room and the beach. Cuba has too much to offer, but you won’t see anything.

5. If You’re Working for Clients, They Won’t Appreciate Your New Schedule

If you’re working on your next big novel, a trip may be exactly what you need. But if you’re tied with deadlines or you’re working with clients, you have specific instructions to follow and workload to complete. When you’re traveling, you lose a few days on transportation. If you’re flying to a different time zone, you’ll need a few more days to recover from the jet lag. Then, you’ll start working, but you’ll work less with the intention to see more of the place you visit.

Your clients won’t appreciate that. They need the work to be done, so they will probably hire another author to fill in. What if that author is better than you? What if you lose part of your workflow for good? Think about that!

You have the right to a vacation! No one denies that. However, your clients would expect you to take two weeks or a month off. If you head off to Cuba for two months, you can’t expect them to be happy for you.

So that’s why I’m not writing this from the beach. It’s a nice idea of a lifestyle and I tried it, but it didn’t go as planned. I write when I write, and I’m a tourist when I’m a tourist. Multitasking doesn’t really work for me, and most writers I know feel the same way about their write-and-travel adventures.

Writing Successfully: Overcoming Self-Doubt and Negativity

If you are anything like me, you habitually deal with the small little voice that tries to convince you that you are wasting your time. We talked about it a couple of weeks ago; it begins with Blank Page Syndrome. Even when you overcome the fear of an empty page, the self-doubt can still linger, and be burdensome. This is especially the case when you do not have someone in your corner cheering you on, like an accountability partner.

Don’t Doubt Your Ability

At one point, you felt accomplished; proud of the work you had done. You remember that feeling, but sometimes it feels like that was days ago. Months ago. But you remember. Successful writing is more than getting published. It’s more than having a byline or getting paid to write. It’s getting to do what you love to do.

Over the past month, we have covered topics that I hope have made you think. Just writing these blogs has refreshed my memory and rekindled my feelings about writing. The main thing I have learned is that you should never doubt your ability. If you have the hankering to put pen to paper and tell a story, then do it. It doesn’t matter if your first draft is good or not. Ernest Hemingway, Nobel Prize in Literature winner, once said, “The first draft of anything is crap.”

Terry Pratchett from Freedom with Writing (this website I mentioned last week. It is a good site for writers. I suggest you check it out) reminds us, “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” Your job is just to get it on paper. It’s not going to be perfect, that is the purpose of editing. Do you think that Hemingway nailed it the first time when he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls?

A successful writing career is all about riding the roller-coaster of emotions that come with it. Ray Bradbury tells us, “You only fail when you stop writing.” Don’t give up, just keep writing. Your passion for writing is enough. If you have the love for it, you can be successful. Just remember all we have learned thus far and put to use the tools in your toolbox.

Don’t Doubt Your Availability

Excuses, excuses, excuses. “I don’t have the time to write.” “I’ll write it someday.” “I have too many things on my plate.” I have used them all. Even as I am writing this I have that ‘I’m too tired to write’ hitting me. This week has been tough. You see, for the last six months I have been out of work due to an injury. Last week I finally returned to work. During my time off, I had all the time in the world to write. Now I’m back to 12-hour shifts and coming home dead dog tired, I rarely have the energy to write. Including this week’s blog. But there is nothing like a deadline that motivates you to finish a project. I work tomorrow, so my deadline is bedtime tonight.

Another thing, telling yourself that you will write someday is a lie. You won’t. Someday is not a day of the week and tomorrow never comes because it is always out there. Always out of reach. Unless you do something today to make a difference, you will wake up one day with life having passed you by. Today take the time to make the first step. Write something, anything, just write.

I have seen a quote on Pinterest, but it does not give who said it, even with a web search I could not find the author, so I am unable to provide a source. (I like to give credit where credit is due, as you should. Plagiarism is a slap in the face of the original writer.) The quote says this: “We make time for what is important to us. If you haven’t made the time for it, you have not convinced yourself that it’s important enough.” If your heart’s desire is to write, then you will find time to write.

Remember we talked about making it a habit. Even if it is a simple list of ideas, that is a start. The next thing is to expound on those ideas. Take one of them add to it. If you have an idea of flowers, then write all the names of flowers you know. Then during your next writing session, take each flower and write about its characteristics; the colors and smells. Writing is about capturing the senses and putting them on paper, so others can share the experience you went through as you wrote it. Down to every detail, even the feeling of the prick of a thorn.

Don’t Listen to Naysayers

I’m sure you have heard them all. “Writing? Why would you want to do that?” “You’re not good enough.” “You’re too young.” “You’re too old.” “What could you have to say?”

For me, it’s not so much nay saying. When I tell people that I am a writer, I usually get that smile and nod. You may be aware of that look. The look that shows you they are humoring you with their acceptance. It can be discouraging. I want to be taken seriously, just as you do. I am sure you would agree it is difficult when others do not understand your desires. But it is your passion; one does not have to share it with you for you to be successful.

It helps to surround yourself with those who will bring out the best in you. Listen to the voices that encourage you, even when they are critical. A good friend will not be a yes man, only saying good things about what you write. They will give you honest feedback, even when it is not what you want to hear. Their advice will help you become a better writer. The difficulty is finding those friends. Most of the time that voice will come from another writer. Another soul, going through the same situation.

Final Thoughts

Each of us will have a different level of success. Some of you reading this could be a best-selling author. Some of you may find a career writing for a publication. Some of you will continue to write just for the fun of it. Some of you will write things only your eyes will see. If you are happy with what you have done, you are writing successfully. Success is more than having your name in lights, bold type, or hyperlinked. It’s about laying your head on your pillow at night resting in a job well done.

One final thing, don’t allow those who lack understanding of your passion get in the way. It’s not their future; it’s yours. Let them shake their head in approval and the whole time laugh inside. Who will be laughing when your first piece is recognized? I remember how I felt when I was published for the first time. So will you. It is an emotion you will never forget. It is the satisfaction that only comes with accomplishing something others did not think you could do; Something even you doubted you could do at times. It’s the enjoyment of the benefits of having the tenacity to see it through till the end and finishing the race. Now get on the starting blocks and write something.

Troubador Publishing Rolls Out its New Website

Troubador logoTroubador Publishing, one of the major publishing service providers for indie authors, has significantly redesigned its website with some impressive improvements.

From the Press release:

The redesigned Troubador Publishing Ltd website brings together all the imprints associated with Troubador for the first time, from the well-respected Matador imprint to the independently-minded Book Guild – while still showcasing all the writing and publishing events the company organises alongside its publishing programme. The new site features a cleaner interface that is easier to navigate for users and written with mobile device browsing very much in mind. The content of the website, from text through images, factsheets to news stories, has been rewritten and reimagined to make it sharper and more appealing. Apart from a fresh new look, the key features of the new site are:

  • New features and functions have been added to help users access company information and resources more quickly and to showcase books more readily. One of the most significant changes takes place behind the scenes, where the bookshop content is now driven by a daily Onix data feed to ensure the most up to date information.
  • The Author Centre functionality has been enhanced, in particular royalty reporting. Now featuring a historical royalty section where previous royalty statements from both physical and ebooks are available to download by an author – in addition to a snapshot of the current position being available.
  • The site now features a blog for the first time, which includes articles by staff, authors and guest writers on all aspects of self-publishing – taking all the experience and passion the team have and continuing the company ethos of making as much information available to indie authors.
  • One of the most significant changes can be seen in the new bookshop, making it easier for customers to browse and buy. Covers are now displayed more dynamically, books are given more space, enhanced functionality for reviewing, discounting and discoverability have been built in. As well as featuring each month’s new titles, there’s a more extensive special offers section, a themed sale section and a preview of what’s in the upcoming publishing schedule. Customer reviews are given a greater prominence in the new bookshop.
  • The addition of a new live chat function on the Matador pages lets customers speak with actual staff (not chatbots) during office hours.
